Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in B Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: B (bar 1, B5), A (bar 2, A5), E (bar 3, E5), B (bar 4, B5). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to B.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

These are power chords, so there is no third to target. Alternate root and fifth on each change: B–F# over B5, A–E over A5, E–B over E5.

  3. 3. B Major Pentatonic in position

Play B Major Pentatonic (B C# D# F# G#) up and down in frets 6–10, one note per beat at 138 BPM. Start and finish on B: 6th string fret 7, or 5th string fret 2 for the next position up.
