Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in G Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: G (bars 1–4, Gm7), C (bars 5–6, Cm7), G (bars 7–8, Gm7), D (bar 9, D7), C (bar 10, Cm7), G (bar 11, Gm7), D (bar 12, D7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to G.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Bb over Gm7, Eb over Cm7, F# over D7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. G Minor Pentatonic in position

Play G Minor Pentatonic (G Bb C D F) up and down in frets 2–6, one note per beat at 68 BPM. Start and finish on G: 6th string fret 3, or 5th string fret 10 for the next position up.
