Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in B Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: B (bars 1–2, Bmaj7), C# (bars 3–4, C#7), C# (bar 5, C#m7), F# (bar 6, F#7), B (bar 7, Bmaj7), C (bar 8, C7), B (bars 9–10, Bmaj7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to B.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: D# over Bmaj7, E# over C#7, E over C#m7, A# over F#7, E over C7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. B Major Scale in position

Play B Major Scale (B C# D# E F# G# A#) up and down in frets 6–10, one note per beat at 135 BPM. Start and finish on B: 6th string fret 7, or 5th string fret 2 for the next position up.
