Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in G Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: G (bars 1–2, Gmaj7), A (bars 3–4, A7), A (bar 5, Am7), D (bar 6, D7), G (bar 7, Gmaj7), Ab (bar 8, Ab7), G (bars 9–10, Gmaj7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to G.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: B over Gmaj7, C# over A7, C over Am7, F# over D7, C over Ab7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. G Major Scale in position

Play G Major Scale (G A B C D E F#) up and down in frets 2–6, one note per beat at 135 BPM. Start and finish on G: 6th string fret 3, or 5th string fret 10 for the next position up.
