Practice drills

  1. 1. Count the form at 80 BPM

At 80 BPM one beat lasts 0.75 s, one bar 3 s, and the 4-bar form 0:12. Count aloud through one full chorus before you play.

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: E (bars 1–2, Em7), A (bar 3, Am7), E (bar 4, Em7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to E.

  2. 2. Subdivide the shuffle

This groove swings, so the beat divides into three. Play E in triplets: at 80 BPM that is 4 notes per second. Then keep only the first and third note of each triplet to hear the shuffle.

Play E Dorian (E F# G A B C# D) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 80 BPM. Start and finish on E: 6th string fret 0, or 5th string fret 7 for the next position up.

  3. 3. Sustain and resolve

Hold G, the third of Em7, for a whole bar (3 s) with slow, even vibrato. When the chord changes, move to the nearest chord tone of the new chord.
