Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in E Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: E (bars 1–2, E9), A (bar 3, A9), E (bar 4, E9), B (bar 5, B9), A (bar 5, beat 3, A9), E (bars 6–7, E9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to E.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: G# over E9, C# over A9, D# over B9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. E Mixolydian in position

Play E Mixolydian (E F# G# A B C# D) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 108 BPM. Start and finish on E: 6th string fret 0, or 5th string fret 7 for the next position up.
