Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in B Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: E (bar 1, Em7), A (bar 2, A7), D (bar 3, Dmaj7), G (bar 4, Gmaj7), C# (bar 5, C#m7b5), F# (bar 6, F#7b9), B (bars 7–8, Bm7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to B.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: G over Em7, C# over A7, F# over Dmaj7, B over Gmaj7, E over C#m7b5, A# over F#7b9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. B Dorian in position

Play B Dorian (B C# D E F# G# A) up and down in frets 6–10, one note per beat at 140 BPM. Start and finish on B: 6th string fret 7, or 5th string fret 2 for the next position up.
