Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F (bar 1, Fm7), Bb (bar 2, Bb7), Eb (bar 3, Ebmaj7), Ab (bar 4, Abmaj7), D (bar 5, Dm7b5), G (bar 6, G7b9), C (bars 7–8, Cm7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Ab over Fm7, D over Bb7, G over Ebmaj7, C over Abmaj7, F over Dm7b5, B over G7b9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C Dorian in position

Play C Dorian (C D Eb F G A Bb) up and down in frets 7–11, one note per beat at 140 BPM. Start and finish on C: 6th string fret 8, or 5th string fret 3 for the next position up.
