Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C# Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C# (bar 1, C#maj7), C# (bar 2, C#7), F# (bar 2, beat 3, F#7), E# (bar 3, E#m7), A# (bar 3, beat 3, A#7), D# (bar 4, D#m7), G# (bar 4, beat 3, G#7), C# (bar 5, C#maj7), C# (bar 5, beat 3, C#7), F# (bar 6, F#maj7), and so on through the form. Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C#.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: E# over C#maj7, E# over C#7, A# over F#7, G# over E#m7, C## over A#7, F# over D#m7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C# Major Pentatonic in position

Play C# Major Pentatonic (C# D# E# G# A#) up and down in frets 8–12, one note per beat at 160 BPM. Start and finish on C#: 6th string fret 9, or 5th string fret 4 for the next position up.
