Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in B Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: B (bar 1, B), E (bar 2, E), F# (bar 3, F#7), B (bar 4, B), G# (bar 5, G#m), C# (bar 6, C#m), F# (bar 7, F#7), B (bar 8, B). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to B.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: D# over B, G# over E, A# over F#7, B over G#m, E over C#m. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. B Phrygian in position

Play B Phrygian (B C D E F# G A) up and down in frets 6–10, one note per beat at 145 BPM. Start and finish on B: 6th string fret 7, or 5th string fret 2 for the next position up.
