Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in D Minor

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: D (bar 1, Dm9), G (bar 2, G13), C (bar 3, Cmaj7), F (bar 4, Fmaj7), B (bar 5, Bm7b5), E (bar 6, E7b9), A (bar 7, Am7), A (bar 8, A7b9), D (bar 9, Dm9), G (bar 10, G13), and so on through the form. Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to D.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: F over Dm9, B over G13, E over Cmaj7, A over Fmaj7, D over Bm7b5, G# over E7b9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. D Phrygian in position

Play D Phrygian (D Eb F G A Bb C) up and down in frets 9–13, one note per beat at 138 BPM. Start and finish on D: 6th string fret 10, or 5th string fret 5 for the next position up.
