Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in A Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: A (bar 1, A5), G (bar 2, G5), D (bar 3, D5), A (bar 4, A5). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to A.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

These are power chords, so there is no third to target. Alternate root and fifth on each change: A–E over A5, G–D over G5, D–A over D5.

  3. 3. A Major Pentatonic in position

Play A Major Pentatonic (A B C# E F#) up and down in frets 4–8, one note per beat at 138 BPM. Start and finish on A: 6th string fret 5, or 5th string fret 0 for the next position up.
