Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in A Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: A (bar 1, A), C# (bar 2, C#m), F# (bar 3, F#m), D (bar 4, D), A (bar 5, A), C# (bar 6, C#m), F# (bar 7, F#m), D (bar 8, D). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to A.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: C# over A, E over C#m, A over F#m, F# over D. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. A Major Pentatonic in position

Play A Major Pentatonic (A B C# E F#) up and down in frets 4–8, one note per beat at 67 BPM. Start and finish on A: 6th string fret 5, or 5th string fret 0 for the next position up.
