Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F (bar 1, F5), Eb (bar 2, Eb5), Bb (bar 3, Bb5), F (bar 4, F5). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

These are power chords, so there is no third to target. Alternate root and fifth on each change: F–C over F5, Eb–Bb over Eb5, Bb–F over Bb5.

  3. 3. F Major Pentatonic in position

Play F Major Pentatonic (F G A C D) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 138 BPM. Start and finish on F: 6th string fret 1, or 5th string fret 8 for the next position up.
