Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F (bars 1–3, F6), F (bar 4, F7), Bb (bars 5–6, Bb6), F (bars 7–8, F6), C (bar 9, C7), Bb (bar 10, Bb6), F (bar 11, F6), C (bar 12, C7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: A over F6, A over F7, D over Bb6, E over C7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F Major Scale in position

Play F Major Scale (F G A Bb C D E) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 180 BPM. Start and finish on F: 6th string fret 1, or 5th string fret 8 for the next position up.
