Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in B Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: B (bar 1, B), D# (bar 2, D#m), G# (bar 3, G#m), E (bar 4, E), B (bar 5, B), D# (bar 6, D#m), G# (bar 7, G#m), E (bar 8, E). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to B.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: D# over B, F# over D#m, B over G#m, G# over E. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. B Major Pentatonic in position

Play B Major Pentatonic (B C# D# F# G#) up and down in frets 6–10, one note per beat at 67 BPM. Start and finish on B: 6th string fret 7, or 5th string fret 2 for the next position up.
