Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F# Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F# (bar 1, F#), A# (bar 2, A#m), D# (bar 3, D#m), B (bar 4, B), F# (bar 5, F#), A# (bar 6, A#m), D# (bar 7, D#m), B (bar 8, B). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F#.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: A# over F#, C# over A#m, F# over D#m, D# over B. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F# Major Pentatonic in position

Play F# Major Pentatonic (F# G# A# C# D#) up and down in frets 1–5, one note per beat at 67 BPM. Start and finish on F#: 6th string fret 2, or 5th string fret 9 for the next position up.
