Practice drills

  1. 1. Count the form at 64 BPM

At 64 BPM one beat lasts 0.94 s, one bar 3.75 s, and the 8-bar form 0:30. Count aloud through one full chorus before you play.

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C (bar 1, C), F (bar 2, F), C (bar 3, C), G (bar 4, G), C (bar 5, C), F (bar 6, F), G (bar 7, G), C (bar 8, C). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C.

  2. 2. Subdivide the beat

Play C in eighth notes (2.13 per second at 64 BPM), then sixteenths (4.27 per second). Stay relaxed; slow tempos expose rushing more than fast ones.

Play C Major Pentatonic (C D E G A) up and down in frets 7–11, one note per beat at 64 BPM. Start and finish on C: 6th string fret 8, or 5th string fret 3 for the next position up.

  3. 3. Sustain and resolve

Hold E, the third of C, for a whole bar (3.75 s) with slow, even vibrato. When the chord changes, move to the nearest chord tone of the new chord.
