Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in A Minor

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: A (bar 1, Am7), C (bar 2, C), F (bar 3, Fmaj7), E (bar 4, E7), A (bar 5, Am7), C (bar 6, C), F (bar 7, Fmaj7), E (bar 8, E7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to A.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: C over Am7, E over C, A over Fmaj7, G# over E7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. A Minor Pentatonic in position

Play A Minor Pentatonic (A C D E G) up and down in frets 4–8, one note per beat at 76 BPM. Start and finish on A: 6th string fret 5, or 5th string fret 0 for the next position up.
