Practice drills

  1. 1. Count the form at 70 BPM

At 70 BPM one beat lasts 0.86 s, one bar 3.43 s, and the 12-bar form 0:41. Count aloud through one full chorus before you play.

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: A (bars 1–4, A5), D (bars 5–6, D5), A (bars 7–8, A5), E (bar 9, E5), D (bar 10, D5), A (bar 11, A5), E (bar 12, E5). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to A.

  2. 2. Subdivide the beat

Play A in eighth notes (2.33 per second at 70 BPM), then sixteenths (4.67 per second). Stay relaxed; slow tempos expose rushing more than fast ones.

Play A Minor Pentatonic (A C D E G) up and down in frets 4–8, one note per beat at 70 BPM. Start and finish on A: 6th string fret 5, or 5th string fret 0 for the next position up.

  3. 3. Sustain and resolve

Hold A over A5 for a whole bar (3.43 s) with slow, even vibrato, then move to the next chord's root when it changes.
