Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in E Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: E (bar 1, Em7), F# (bar 2, F#m7b5), B (bar 3, B7), E (bar 4, Em7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to E.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: G over Em7, A over F#m7b5, D# over B7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. E Dorian in position

Play E Dorian (E F# G A B C# D) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 135 BPM. Start and finish on E: 6th string fret 0, or 5th string fret 7 for the next position up.
