Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F (bar 1, Fm7), G (bar 2, Gm7b5), C (bar 3, C7), F (bar 4, Fm7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Ab over Fm7, Bb over Gm7b5, E over C7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F Dorian in position

Play F Dorian (F G Ab Bb C D Eb) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 135 BPM. Start and finish on F: 6th string fret 1, or 5th string fret 8 for the next position up.
