Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F (bars 1–2, Fm7), Bb (bar 3, Bb7), C (bar 4, Cm7), F (bars 5–6, Fm7), Bb (bar 7, Bbm7), C (bar 8, C7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Ab over Fm7, D over Bb7, Eb over Cm7, Db over Bbm7, E over C7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F Dorian in position

Play F Dorian (F G Ab Bb C D Eb) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 118 BPM. Start and finish on F: 6th string fret 1, or 5th string fret 8 for the next position up.
