Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in G Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: G (bar 1, Gm7), A (bar 2, Am7b5), D (bar 3, D7), G (bar 4, Gm7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to G.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Bb over Gm7, C over Am7b5, F# over D7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. G Dorian in position

Play G Dorian (G A Bb C D E F) up and down in frets 2–6, one note per beat at 135 BPM. Start and finish on G: 6th string fret 3, or 5th string fret 10 for the next position up.
