Practice drills

  1. 1. Count the form at 72 BPM

At 72 BPM one beat lasts 0.83 s, one bar 3.33 s, and the 8-bar form 0:27. Count aloud through one full chorus before you play.

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F (bar 1, F), Bb (bar 2, Bb), F (bar 3, F), C (bar 4, C), F (bar 5, F), Bb (bar 6, Bb), C (bar 7, C), F (bar 8, F). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F.

  2. 2. Subdivide the beat

Play F in eighth notes (2.4 per second at 72 BPM), then sixteenths (4.8 per second). Stay relaxed; slow tempos expose rushing more than fast ones.

Play F Major Pentatonic (F G A C D) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 72 BPM. Start and finish on F: 6th string fret 1, or 5th string fret 8 for the next position up.

  3. 3. Sustain and resolve

Hold A, the third of F, for a whole bar (3.33 s) with slow, even vibrato. When the chord changes, move to the nearest chord tone of the new chord.
