Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in G Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: G (bars 1–2, G), C (bar 3, C), D (bar 4, D), G (bars 5–6, G), C (bar 7, C), D (bar 8, D), G (bar 9, G), C (bar 10, C), D (bar 11, D), G (bar 12, G). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to G.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: B over G, E over C, F# over D. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. G Major Pentatonic in position

Play G Major Pentatonic (G A B D E) up and down in frets 2–6, one note per beat at 118 BPM. Start and finish on G: 6th string fret 3, or 5th string fret 10 for the next position up.
