Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C (bars 1–4, C7), F (bars 5–6, F7), C (bars 7–8, C7), G (bar 9, G7), F (bar 10, F7), C (bar 11, C7), G (bar 12, G7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: E over C7, A over F7, B over G7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C Major Pentatonic in position

Play C Major Pentatonic (C D E G A) up and down in frets 7–11, one note per beat at 118 BPM. Start and finish on C: 6th string fret 8, or 5th string fret 3 for the next position up.
