Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C# Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C# (bar 1, C#maj7), A# (bar 2, A#m7), F# (bar 3, F#maj7), G# (bar 4, G#7), C# (bar 5, C#maj7), A# (bar 6, A#m7), F# (bar 7, F#maj7), G# (bar 8, G#7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C#.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: E# over C#maj7, C# over A#m7, A# over F#maj7, B# over G#7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C# Mixolydian in position

Play C# Mixolydian (C# D# E# F# G# A# B) up and down in frets 8–12, one note per beat at 126 BPM. Start and finish on C#: 6th string fret 9, or 5th string fret 4 for the next position up.
