Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in E Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: E (bar 1, Emaj7), C# (bar 2, C#m7), A (bar 3, Amaj7), B (bar 4, B7), E (bar 5, Emaj7), C# (bar 6, C#m7), A (bar 7, Amaj7), B (bar 8, B7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to E.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: G# over Emaj7, E over C#m7, C# over Amaj7, D# over B7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. E Mixolydian in position

Play E Mixolydian (E F# G# A B C# D) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 126 BPM. Start and finish on E: 6th string fret 0, or 5th string fret 7 for the next position up.
