Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F# Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F# (bar 1, F#maj7), D# (bar 2, D#m7), B (bar 3, Bmaj7), C# (bar 4, C#7), F# (bar 5, F#maj7), D# (bar 6, D#m7), B (bar 7, Bmaj7), C# (bar 8, C#7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F#.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: A# over F#maj7, F# over D#m7, D# over Bmaj7, E# over C#7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F# Mixolydian in position

Play F# Mixolydian (F# G# A# B C# D# E) up and down in frets 1–5, one note per beat at 126 BPM. Start and finish on F#: 6th string fret 2, or 5th string fret 9 for the next position up.
