Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in B Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: B (bars 1–2, B9), E (bar 3, E9), B (bar 4, B9), F# (bar 5, F#9), E (bar 5, beat 3, E9), B (bars 6–7, B9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to B.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: D# over B9, G# over E9, A# over F#9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. B Mixolydian in position

Play B Mixolydian (B C# D# E F# G# A) up and down in frets 6–10, one note per beat at 108 BPM. Start and finish on B: 6th string fret 7, or 5th string fret 2 for the next position up.
