Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C# Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C# (bars 1–2, C#9), F# (bar 3, F#9), C# (bar 4, C#9), G# (bar 5, G#9), F# (bar 5, beat 3, F#9), C# (bars 6–7, C#9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C#.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: E# over C#9, A# over F#9, B# over G#9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C# Mixolydian in position

Play C# Mixolydian (C# D# E# F# G# A# B) up and down in frets 8–12, one note per beat at 108 BPM. Start and finish on C#: 6th string fret 9, or 5th string fret 4 for the next position up.
