Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in D Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: D (bars 1–2, D9), G (bar 3, G9), D (bar 4, D9), A (bar 5, A9), G (bar 5, beat 3, G9), D (bars 6–7, D9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to D.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: F# over D9, B over G9, C# over A9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. D Mixolydian in position

Play D Mixolydian (D E F# G A B C) up and down in frets 9–13, one note per beat at 108 BPM. Start and finish on D: 6th string fret 10, or 5th string fret 5 for the next position up.
