Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F# Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F# (bars 1–2, F#9), B (bar 3, B9), F# (bar 4, F#9), C# (bar 5, C#9), B (bar 5, beat 3, B9), F# (bars 6–7, F#9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F#.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: A# over F#9, D# over B9, E# over C#9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F# Mixolydian in position

Play F# Mixolydian (F# G# A# B C# D# E) up and down in frets 1–5, one note per beat at 108 BPM. Start and finish on F#: 6th string fret 2, or 5th string fret 9 for the next position up.
