Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in A Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: D (bar 1, Dm7), G (bar 2, G7), C (bar 3, Cmaj7), F (bar 4, Fmaj7), B (bar 5, Bm7b5), E (bar 6, E7b9), A (bars 7–8, Am7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to A.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: F over Dm7, B over G7, E over Cmaj7, A over Fmaj7, D over Bm7b5, G# over E7b9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. A Dorian in position

Play A Dorian (A B C D E F# G) up and down in frets 4–8, one note per beat at 140 BPM. Start and finish on A: 6th string fret 5, or 5th string fret 0 for the next position up.
