Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F (bar 1, Fmaj7), Bb (bar 2, Bbmaj7), D (bar 3, Dm7), C (bar 4, C7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: A over Fmaj7, D over Bbmaj7, F over Dm7, E over C7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F Major Pentatonic in position

Play F Major Pentatonic (F G A C D) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 78 BPM. Start and finish on F: 6th string fret 1, or 5th string fret 8 for the next position up.
