Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in D Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: D (bars 1–2, Dm7), Bb (bars 3–4, Bbmaj7), A (bars 5–6, Am7), G (bars 7–8, Gm7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to D.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: F over Dm7, D over Bbmaj7, C over Am7, Bb over Gm7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. D Dorian in position

Play D Dorian (D E F G A B C) up and down in frets 9–13, one note per beat at 78 BPM. Start and finish on D: 6th string fret 10, or 5th string fret 5 for the next position up.
