Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C (bar 1, C5), Bb (bar 2, Bb5), F (bar 3, F5), C (bar 4, C5). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

These are power chords, so there is no third to target. Alternate root and fifth on each change: C–G over C5, Bb–F over Bb5, F–C over F5.

  3. 3. C Major Pentatonic in position

Play C Major Pentatonic (C D E G A) up and down in frets 7–11, one note per beat at 138 BPM. Start and finish on C: 6th string fret 8, or 5th string fret 3 for the next position up.
