Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C (bar 1, Cmaj7), A (bar 2, Am7), D (bar 3, Dm7), G (bar 4, G7), C (bar 5, Cmaj7), A (bar 6, A7), D (bar 7, Dm7), G (bar 8, G7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: E over Cmaj7, C over Am7, F over Dm7, B over G7, C# over A7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C Major Scale in position

Play C Major Scale (C D E F G A B) up and down in frets 7–11, one note per beat at 140 BPM. Start and finish on C: 6th string fret 8, or 5th string fret 3 for the next position up.
