Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in E Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: E (bar 1, E5), D (bar 2, D5), A (bar 3, A5), E (bar 4, E5). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to E.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

These are power chords, so there is no third to target. Alternate root and fifth on each change: E–B over E5, D–A over D5, A–E over A5.

  3. 3. E Major Pentatonic in position

Play E Major Pentatonic (E F# G# B C#) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 138 BPM. Start and finish on E: 6th string fret 0, or 5th string fret 7 for the next position up.
