Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C (bars 1–2, Cm), Ab (bars 3–4, Ab), Eb (bars 5–6, Eb), Bb (bars 7–8, Bb). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Eb over Cm, C over Ab, G over Eb, D over Bb. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C Minor Pentatonic in position

Play C Minor Pentatonic (C Eb F G Bb) up and down in frets 7–11, one note per beat at 171 BPM. Start and finish on C: 6th string fret 8, or 5th string fret 3 for the next position up.
