Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F (bar 1, F), A (bar 2, Am), D (bar 3, Dm), Bb (bar 4, Bb), F (bar 5, F), A (bar 6, Am), D (bar 7, Dm), Bb (bar 8, Bb). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: A over F, C over Am, F over Dm, D over Bb. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F Major Pentatonic in position

Play F Major Pentatonic (F G A C D) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 67 BPM. Start and finish on F: 6th string fret 1, or 5th string fret 8 for the next position up.
