Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C# Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C# (bar 1, C#), F# (bar 2, F#), C# (bar 3, C#), G# (bar 4, G#), C# (bar 5, C#), F# (bar 6, F#), G# (bar 7, G#), C# (bar 8, C#). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C#.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: E# over C#, A# over F#, B# over G#. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C# Major Pentatonic in position

Play C# Major Pentatonic (C# D# E# G# A#) up and down in frets 8–12, one note per beat at 76 BPM. Start and finish on C#: 6th string fret 9, or 5th string fret 4 for the next position up.
