Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in G Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: G (bars 1–3, G6), G (bar 4, G7), C (bars 5–6, C6), G (bars 7–8, G6), D (bar 9, D7), C (bar 10, C6), G (bar 11, G6), D (bar 12, D7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to G.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: B over G6, B over G7, E over C6, F# over D7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. G Major Scale in position

Play G Major Scale (G A B C D E F#) up and down in frets 2–6, one note per beat at 180 BPM. Start and finish on G: 6th string fret 3, or 5th string fret 10 for the next position up.
