Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F# Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F# (bar 1, F#m), A (bar 2, A), B (bar 3, Bm), C# (bar 4, C#). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F#.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: A over F#m, C# over A, D over Bm, E# over C#. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F# Minor Pentatonic in position

Play F# Minor Pentatonic (F# A B C# E) up and down in frets 1–5, one note per beat at 118 BPM. Start and finish on F#: 6th string fret 2, or 5th string fret 9 for the next position up.
