Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in A Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: A (bar 1, Amaj7), F# (bar 2, F#m7), D (bar 3, Dmaj7), E (bar 4, E7), A (bar 5, Amaj7), F# (bar 6, F#m7), D (bar 7, Dmaj7), E (bar 8, E7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to A.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: C# over Amaj7, A over F#m7, F# over Dmaj7, G# over E7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. A Mixolydian in position

Play A Mixolydian (A B C# D E F# G) up and down in frets 4–8, one note per beat at 126 BPM. Start and finish on A: 6th string fret 5, or 5th string fret 0 for the next position up.
