Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C (bars 1–2, Cm7), F (bar 3, Fm7), C (bar 4, Cm7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Eb over Cm7, Ab over Fm7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C Dorian in position

Play C Dorian (C D Eb F G A Bb) up and down in frets 7–11, one note per beat at 100 BPM. Start and finish on C: 6th string fret 8, or 5th string fret 3 for the next position up.
