Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F (bars 1–2, F9), Bb (bar 3, Bb9), F (bar 4, F9), C (bar 5, C9), Bb (bar 5, beat 3, Bb9), F (bars 6–7, F9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: A over F9, D over Bb9, E over C9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F Mixolydian in position

Play F Mixolydian (F G A Bb C D Eb) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 108 BPM. Start and finish on F: 6th string fret 1, or 5th string fret 8 for the next position up.
