Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in D Minor

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: D (bars 1–2, Dm6), G (bar 3, Gm7), D (bars 4–5, Dm6), A (bar 6, A7b9), G (bar 7, Gm7), D (bar 8, Dm6), E (bar 9, Em7b5), A (bar 10, A7b9), D (bar 11, Dm6), A (bar 12, A7b9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to D.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: F over Dm6, Bb over Gm7, C# over A7b9, G over Em7b5. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. D Harmonic Minor in position

Play D Harmonic Minor (D E F G A Bb C#) up and down in frets 9–13, one note per beat at 165 BPM. Start and finish on D: 6th string fret 10, or 5th string fret 5 for the next position up.
