Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in G Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: G (bar 1, G5), F (bar 2, F5), C (bar 3, C5), G (bar 4, G5). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to G.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

These are power chords, so there is no third to target. Alternate root and fifth on each change: G–D over G5, F–C over F5, C–G over C5.

  3. 3. G Major Pentatonic in position

Play G Major Pentatonic (G A B D E) up and down in frets 2–6, one note per beat at 138 BPM. Start and finish on G: 6th string fret 3, or 5th string fret 10 for the next position up.
